Blogging During the Holidays

Happy Thanksgiving

For most of my readers, the holiday season is about to go into full swing, starting tomorrow with Thanksgiving. Tis the season of four day weekends, or even full weeks off of full time jobs, depending on what you do for a living.

For me, I am not traveling, and I have a bit more time off than my husband does. So I want to take some of my extra time and really work on getting caught up with commenting on other blogs, writing new articles for all of my sites, and doing a re-design of my portfolio. Yes, it all sounds like a lot of “work” during the holidays, but at the same time, I really enjoy doing it. Plus I’ll be doing lots of other personal activities, like playing tennis and reading.

So my question for everyone, going into the holidays, is what do you plan to do with your additional time? Have you made specific plans? Will it be devoted to family, friends, and traveling? Or do you have some special projects you plan to get caught up on before the new year begins?

To all my American friends and readers, a very Happy Thanksgiving to you! And for all of those who will still be actively online, don’t worry – there will still be a Fetching Friday as always!

  1. Well, I am currently in Tulsa, OK visiting my Dad and others (note: they moved here years ago, but we’re from seattle, wa, I have to always add that disclaimer, ;p …). In my spare time so far out here. I added a new blog post today and then went to my wordpress.com and removed everything except for one page telling my readers to continue to follow me over at my new website. I’m still waiting to work with a friend on a logo for my site, but that will have to wait until I return to Orlando, FL. Other than that, I may try to work a bit more on my website… adding additional side pane widgets and stuff… all in due time!

  2. It looks like we have a priority in common for the holidays: reading and commenting more consistently on specific blogs. For me that means yours. I am working on a process for keeping track of my favorite blogs so I can visit them far more often. I just added this post to a tracking tool I’m testing.

Except for cooking a big traditional Thanksgiving dinner, tomorrow will be another day online as almost every day is. I am always so busy and the holiday shopping season is particularly challenging for me with more to do than ever.

I hope you’ll have time to visit my blog and connect with me across Social Networks. I have opened your about page and am going to locate and follow you on the sites you have linked from it. We should all follow your lead and add them to our about pages too. I’ve been meaning to update the about pages on all of my blogs. Always more to do.

For now you can find mine in the Social Networking is not chat post in my Most Popular section. When I RT this post I’ll suggest others do the same. Oh, and check out my dofollow bloggers list at Twitter. I’m using it to remind me who to RT and where to comment.

  3. Internet Strategist @GrowMap — Just so you know, there’s already a tool to help you do just that and its free: Google Reader. Take a look at it:
    http://reader.google.com
I use it and I can keep track of all of the blogs that I follow. Check it out and hopes it works for you!

  4. No change for me. I’ve been trying to subscribe to more blogs, and read/comment on more blog posts, in recent weeks.

  5. …and I just noticed a bug with either your form or the CommentLuv system.

If my website field is pre-filled when loading this page, the plugin doesn’t work. If I scratch it out and type it in fresh, the plugin fetches the latest blog post.

  6. For me, it’s relax and focus on some project work. I’ve never really been one to sit still for very long, have to keep forging ahead right?

I would like to say I’d be looking to comment on more blogs, but if I did, I’d surely be lying. I know that I’ll just keep pounding out that project until it’s done.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Kristi!

  7. We’re going to Atlanta to visit my family tomorrow, but I’ll definitely be back online in time for Fetching Friday! In general, during my extra days off from work this week and around Christmas, I plan to catch up on household stuff, spend time with family, and definitely do some of those things on my to-do list for the blog. Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. Well, i’m working until the 24th of December and then will spend a few days with my family. We made plans already last year for this getaway and I can’t wait. I have already schedlued many posts for December which means that I will have a lot of spare time to do other things and enjoy myself.

I know I have a few taks which need to be done before the holidays and I hope to accomplish them all.

  10. Happy Thanksgiving Kristi! I am in PA for the weekend and taking a day off from blogging.

    Enjoy all!

  12. Happy Thanksgiving to Krista, your family, friends and all who read this.

@Andre I minimize Google use as much as possible and my intention is to create a process for visiting, commenting on and sharing on dofollow blogs. I’m not sure Google Reader would be useful for that specific task; however, I choose not to use it so I do not know if it would be viable for that or not.

@Ari Your URL has to be EXACTLY how you registered it for CommentLuv to pick up your posts. I know you must have the www or not correct and also whether you have a trailing / or not makes a difference. It may even be case sensitive.

  13. Happy Thanksgiving Kristi. Hope you have a great holiday weekend.

I’m still working out a holiday season schedule. I’m wondering if there will be fewer people online during the holiday season due to vacations or if there will be more people online because they have more time to spend online while not at work. Hmm…

  14. Hi Kristi,

For me, a holiday is to be with my family. It is a great opportunity to update my blogs and sites and at the same time enjoy the weather in Malaysia. But now it is a rainy season here so need to do more activities indoor.

Anyway even during holiday, blogging have to carry on even via my mobile phone!

    Have a great day.

  16. I sent out emails to my web clients letting them know that my availability would be scaled back but that they could still reach me by phone if needed. I thankfully enjoyed a peaceful day with family, food, and football. BTW, I did address a few of my clients’ issue in the evening.

  18. Hi Kristi,
I really don’t have any additional time. I’m behind on everything and it’s driving me nuts. Between all of the things that I have on my plate organizing documentation stuff is high up there. I’m the planner kind and love to have things done way ahead of time. When I do have a little extra time I just want to hang out with my boys and play games with them.
    All the best,
    Eren

  19. I actually ended up taking an unintentional break from all online activities this Thanksgiving. My Internet went out at home, so I was unable to go online for a few days. Well, other when I was at my families/friends house anyway. While this was completely unintentional, it actually ended up being kind of nice not to check my email or sites for a few days.

    Anyway, happy belated Thanksgiving :)

  20. For me, there’s almost no such thing as additional time. I’m writing all the time, and by going to my mother’s house I’ve ended up giving myself some major writing issues to try to complete some projects on time so I can get paid. Still, I wouldn’t give up the opportunity to spend holiday time with my mother and grandmother.
