Rethinking My Hosting
Earlier this week, my site was hacked for the third time in less than a month – this time was the Holasionweb script. After the last two hacks (the first which I wrote about extensively) I…
- Scanned my machines and removed any viruses / spyware (the first time there was a trojan on my laptop, but the second time there was nothing.
- Changed all my passwords (Go Daddy main account, FTP, database, WordPress admin, etc.).
- Deleted and reinstalled all WordPress files, plugins, theme files, etc. with the latest versions.
- Changed file / folder permissions.
- Moved my wp-config into another folder.
- Thought I was safe.
So even after all of this, I was still hacked… again, and again. What I know is…
- The sites (two on separate accounts) that I have on Go Daddy that were upgraded to the latest WordPress versions were the ones that got hacked.
- The sites I have on Godaddy on two other separate hosting accounts that were not upgraded to the latest version (or even secured) were not hacked.
- A former Go Daddy client who switched to HostGator after the first two attacks but before the Holasionweb script site remained unaffected even without additional security measures.
At this point, it seems silly to stick with Go Daddy with the imminent threat of another attack always looming over my most trafficked sites. But at the same time, other hosts like Network Solutions have been hit with this thing as well. So who’s to say that if I moved to another host the same thing wouldn’t ultimately happen to them.
Why do I still like Go Daddy? Because up until this point, I have received nothing but great service from them. They have gotten my site up quickly when it went down due to a plugin instability that I couldn’t figure out. They helped me re-register a domain because I misspelled it during registration. They helped me remove services from my account that I couldn’t figure out how to do online. Overall, I have always been satisfied with them without any problems.
While I acknowledge that Go Daddy is responding and working on things, I would like to hear them stop repeating the same broken record about upgrading the sites and changing the passwords, because that is obviously not working. There is something else going on. I want to know what that is, and when it will be solved.
For other Go Daddy readers, here is a good post on reasons to reconsider hosting with them. And affiliates, watch out that they might drop you.
Facebook in Real Life
Continuing on a humorous social media theme that started with throwing Tweetbaggery in the mix with the Twitter articles, here is a funny view of what Facebook interactions would be like in real life.
And in case that isn’t enough for you, check out what Ari Herzog just shared on what Facebook is really for in his latest post.

I did not know that our blog might be hacked, i do not take any precaution for it. I have bought domain name from godaddy, but hosting from one of my friend. Now I will have to keep attention on it.
I have sent you friend request on facebook and myspace, hope you will accept. Also what is your digg and mixx account. I am active on both site.

Go Daddy, the webs #1 domain registrar should stick with their strengths. They have always had a bad track record with hosting, at least ever since I started in early 2000; but I’m not getting into that argument again. lol
What I find interesting here is, you separate Twitter and Facebook from Social Networks…

Yes… I always find a lot of articles on Twitter and Facebook each week, but not necessarily enough from other social networks to give them their own section, so I do the general social networks to cover other sites or articles on multiple specific networks.

That says something right there, don’t it. I wonder if the “other guys” are reading. lol

Excellent list this week Kristi. I’m loving the latest from the Oatmeal!
Sounds like you’ve experienced some major frustrations with GoDaddy. I agree with Dennis–the issues with their hosting have been hashed out elsewhere, so no point in going into that. I am surprised that you have had to deal with back-to-back-to-back attacks on your site(s). What is GoDaddy doing over there? Sheesh.
Here’s hoping your site stays protected and php-exploit free!

Regarding blog hosting, I can’t speak high enough of Tubu. They’re a small hosting company in Pittsburgh that hosts my three domains. I’ve been with them since migrating my blog from Blogger to Wordpress in the fall of 2008.
Prices are competitive (they offer blog hosting rates and web hosting rates, with the former more affordable based on your bandwidth and storage requirements) and customer service is top-notch.
If you click to my affiliate link, you can learn more about Tubu.

Hey Kristi – Since I started reading your list after being mentioned in it a couple of weeks ago, I always find something really cool. The post at imjustsaying.com re: GoDaddy affiliate dropping was very interesting.
Thanks for mentioning a couple of my (and my guest blogger’s) posts this week. I always appreciate your recognition!

The articles on link requests provide a lot of value to me right now thanks for that.
Although the best advice for link requests will always stay this: what value is in it for the person that links to you.
Ah, another huge update on the dofollow directory, awesome!

Hi Kristi,
Hosting companies are doing their best I believe but clearly there are some hosting companies that are better than others.
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had some hacking problems that don’t seem to go away in spite of doing everything you can.
I don’t use Go Daddy but from what I’ve heard more than one internet marketer say I would be very careful.
I hope that the issue will get resolved soon. It may be better to move on and not wait too long for them to tackle this. If they keep on repeating the same thing that may be an indication that they aren’t on top of things.

You talked about upgrading to the latest version of Wordpress, but that one wasn’t a security upgrade, so I didn’t bother with it. Figures, 2.9.2 gets hacked all the time, but 2.9.1 doesn’t, which is what I’m still sitting on. And GoDaddy just seems to be a name that’s so well known that people go after it, kind of like people going after Microsoft more than Apple. Glad you recovered, but it had to be irritating.

I always learn new things from your Friday posts. This week, I was most interested in the facebook section, as I’m attempting to make/improve a fan page for one of my sites.
Thanks.

The problem I have with some do-follow blogs is that they won’t post your link if it’s not relevant to the discussion(I’ve seen it in some comment policies). If you’re a webmaster forum than any website should be relevant to the discussion! You learn more from what people do than what they say, what better way to learn internet blogging then seeing somebody’s niche blog.
You should categorize by comment policy in the do-follow list: whether they allow anchor text as comments, whether they require website to be relevant, and how stingy they are about approving comments.

Never been hacked before though I know of a Hostgator customer whose account was hacked into by some chinese guys. Hostgator had it fixed in no time. You’d probably have to take a look @ security options for wordpress blogs. Limit login attempts plug-in works amazingly well as well as secure wordpress plug-in.

Sorry to hear about your trouble with GoDaddy. I used to have one of my sites hosted with them for around a year. I was never hacked, but always found their hosting to be quite sluggish. I use HostGator now, and haven’t had any problems with them.
