Why has it been so quiet on Kikolani?
This week, as some of you may have noticed, there have been new articles, but not many comment replies from yours truly. I wanted to keep up the posting pace, but I have had a lot on the agenda this week.
First, let’s get the bad stuff out of the way. There was the additional cleanup and paranoia of future attacks caused by the php expoit early in the week, as described in the following section on WordPress security. Also, an evening at home without internet.
Now the good stuff. Soulmates Wedding is up and running – lots of wedding and honeymoon photos. I re-organized a bit by moving a few things from my sidebar to the footer, adding Popular Posts to the footer, and finally adding the Top Commentators list to the sidebar. I also have my first freelance WordPress customization gig! So needless to say, it’s been a busy week.
I should be back to normal next week, and will get caught up on my comments. I have appreciated them all!
WordPress Security
In last week’s Fetching Friday, I wrote about a PHP exploit – gumblar that I experienced on my WordPress site, and also shared some links to WordPress security tips.
At the beginning of this week, I experienced the new incarnation – martuz.cn of the same PHP exploit. This one took a bit longer to clean up, but I think I have finally seen the last of it, as my site has (cross my fingers) been normal for over three days now. For more about the clean up process and how to recognize if you have it on your machine, check out the article on TechJaws. Also, see these additional articles on securing your blog and WordPress security tips.
There is also another new thing going around, that I would love some input on. It happened to another blogger on WordPress – this script has added ads to their site. The ads are in a hidden div tag right after the body of every page, so you cannot see them when you are on the page, but if you search for the blog on Google, the description that comes up talks about gambling, poker, and lots of other things that this blog has absolutely nothing to do with. The only thing I have found so far on it is that it happened on a forum as well. Any advice or links to this exploit would be appreciated.
Preview for the week of 25 May 2009
Next week’s photographic selection will be from Disneyland, the next to last in my honeymoon series of photos. As always, I’m saving the best one for last.
This week, I detoured from my anniversary post because I was compelled to write “What is Success” instead. It was one of those couldn’t write anything else until I got what I wanted to write out of my system. So next week, the anniversary post. It’s probably more fitting, as this site started closer to the end of May anyway.

@Frank: You’re welcome. I hope that if someone finds themselves with that exploit, they will find the information I shared useful.
@Dragos: That experiment is a first of its kind, and I can’t wait to see if it catches on and the benefits for all of the bloggers involved. And thanks for sharing your idea!
@Jonathan: Fetching Friday has really caught on, and I enjoy writing it. I try to add one new thing to the layout a week, but I am also trying to focus more on the content and less on always tweaking the layout.
@Ari: Glad to have lured you in again!
@KushMoney: I assume you mean my wedding site, Soulmates Wedding? I’m glad it is romantically inspiring.

“The ads are in a hidden div tag right after the body of every page, so you cannot see them when you are on the page, but if you search for the blog on Google”
Interesting. So were the ads/links visible at all on the site if you visited it from Google?
It seems like Google would detect and ignore the hidden divs, possibly penalizing the blog, because hidden text is a pretty old trick.
