Numbers 65, 66, 67, and 68 on that “169 ways to build traffic like a ninja” post are excellent tips – no one should do number 64: if you have to pay for attention on social media, you’re not looking for the readers of your blog who are willing to promote, and that’s not a good thing.
“High traffic does not mean good marketing” is exactly right – there’s lots of bloggers who have traffic that isn’t converting into anything. I’m not gonna get preachy about this, because I can safely say that I’ve learned the hard way that there’s a lot in audience building that’s out of one’s control. But I’m definitely not seeing a few people who have traffic on the order of 3,000 – 7,000 uniques a day make much of it besides a little side income. I know what I’m doing with 300 uniques at most and I think it’s pretty awesome: some of them are people who would never have read a poem in their lives, and I can say for what it’s worth I think I’ve helped change that. I’m not saying that to brag – it’s more like, I’m always thinking what I can do and what I would do with more, if it were given.
