Guilty Pleasures

by Kristi on December 2, 2008 in Daily Life | 21 Comments

With the seriousness and stress of day to day life, it is an important thing to allow oneself guilty pleasures. Those things that we may not want to readily admit to everyone, but regardless, they entertain us, whether they are tv shows, movies, or some particular activity. So, in an extension of revelations in the blog tagging post, here are some of my guilty pleasures.

Audiobooks
TwilightHarry Potter

I love listening to the Twilight series and Harry Potter audio books. I also downloaded the soundtrack to Twilight just to hear “Bella’s Lullaby”, and inadvertently got myself addicted to another song on the soundtrack, “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse.

And for those of you who say you would rather watch the movies, I won’t argue with you. I just look at it this way. Instead of enjoying the story for only two hours and having to wait until next year for the next part, I can enjoy the audiobooks for many hours, get the full story instead of an abbreviated version, imagine my own characters, and continue on to hear the rest of the series.

Magazines
Magazines

I am somewhat addicted to magazines. It started with celebrity tabloids, then fashion magazines. I have since migrated to yoga, photography, Asian pop culture, and British web design magazines.

Formalwear
Gowns, dresses, formal wear

When I am out shopping, I like to try on formal dresses and gowns. Especially the big, poofy ones. So needless to say, I am going to have a ball when I go shopping for my wedding dress!

Family Guy
Family Guy

This is probably one of the most offensive, strange, and disturbing cartoons I have ever seen aired on network TV. But it is so funny, I can’t help myself.

Now that I have shared some of my guilty pleasures, it is your turn. What are some of the things you enjoy?

The question I have about the Family Guy is this. What does little Stewie (spelling?) say in the opening sequence:

F’n Cry or Laugh and Cry?

There’s a hot debate in my house on this. I like to think he’s spewing the former, but the house is angled towards the latter.

How about you?

I have a drawer full of audio books (at least 75 titles) that was left by the former resident of the office I now occupy at work. Not one thing I would pick up and listen to unfortunately…all love and romance…blech….give me laser blasters and star ships!

Believe it or not all facets of blogging is one of my most time consuming guilty pleasures. I spend more time blogging than I like to admit. Other than blogging I love books, especially Fantasy and Science fiction. I have never tried an audio book. Do they use different voices for the different characters?

I don’t really get the meaning of ‘guilty’ for this, because I didn’t see it as a guilty, it just me having fun :D
I still love watching Donald Duck and Tom & Jerry in Cartoon Network, I also love Naruto & Doraemon.
And when it comes to the office, I like to share joke that sometime a little bit off limit. :P
When it come to shopping, always go to the gadget store and test the sales if they know better than me. :)

mm, guilty pleasures - so guilty! nice post, Kikolani :) magazines are probably one of my favourite guilty pleasures - so tactile, the feel, the smell - the images, of course. Then you realise a lot of the seduction is just advertising, and that sucks, but still. I keep coming back. Or at least, wanting to come back… then the “uber-guilt” kicks in, and I stop myself. But that’s another story… :)

I have many guilty pleasures, but one of the least intellectual ones is… reality television. Yes, I admit it, I love television.

Maybe it’s because I’m old but I don’t really feel guilty about things that I like to do and I’m not bothered about admitting them. Hmm … maybe I do have one. My occasional smoking … ugh.

A list of my “guilty pleasures” includes:

1. ANYTHING Chocolate

2. “Robot Chicken” on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim”

3. Opera music (especially “Carmen” by Bizet)

4. Dancing with my wife

5. Seeing someone else get pulled over for driving like a complete idiot!

Nothing I feel guilty about but lots of things I enjoy! Hmmm, let’s see, I love some older country songs from the 90’s that most people have no idea I would enjoy listening too. I love spending time in nature to no limits!

But above all, my biggest pleasure is spending time in topical places and with my husband (two pleasures in one!) - cannot do this enough, but boy do I ever melt into another world when I am there or actually anytime I am with him :)

@Vered: I forgot to consider food in this list. Chocolate indeed!

@Wayne: I always though F’n cry, but I think it is supposed to be laugh & cry.

@Jen: That looks like a cool retro shop!

@Sire: It’s usually one reader doing different voices. The guy who does Harry Potter is the best… so many different voices, and yet they still hold from one book to the next.

@Aldhis: I guess we say guilty pleasures because they are usually things we do not want to admit make us so happy. Like a guy wouldn’t admit to his football buddies that he loves soap operas. :)

@Dennis: Yes, it does.

@Matt: I have to fight myself not to buy tons of magazines everytime I got to a bookstore. Or even the supermarket.

@Maria: Sometimes I find reality tv interesting. Looking at how people will act just to make a name for themselves on tv, to generate future fame.

@Kim: I don’t feel too guilty about mine, online at least. I’m not sure I’d tell my office that the reason I haven’t been unattached from my headphones every day is because of listening to all my audiobooks.

@Uncle Pete: Once, this blue mustang passed me on the highway, and a little down the road, I saw him pulled over. Later, he passed me again, and yet again, I saw him pulled over by another cop. I was greatly amused by that.

@Evita: Tropical places with the hubby does sound blissful. I am wonderfully happy anywhere I am with my sweetie.

Great post!

I love chocolate (without sharing it with my kids), old Country Western music (Elvis, Johnny, Patsy, George) and adore bluegrass (Ralph Stanley), watching The Office and Sex in the City episodes whenever they’re on, even if I’ve seen them 50 times already. Love singing in harmony with songs on the radio and pretending I’m good enough to be a fab back-up singer… One of my favorite pleasures is talking with my best friends or family on the phone since we live far apart…of course, I never feel guilty about that unless one of the three kidlets is getting the shaft rather than my full attention. Must admit that twitter is becoming a guilty pleasure :).

Fun!

Cool, that would definitely make it more interesting. I would hate to have to listen to someone reading a book if the the whole thing was done in a single monotone.

I agree with you, Family guy is one of the best TV series. I always enjoy watching it. You should also take a look at American Dad, I will certainly grow on you, even if you don’t like it at first. I usually like listening to movies which I already saw, while I am working at home. This is one of my guilty pleasures.

I’d have to say lately audio books are my guilty pleasure. And I LOVE Family Guy! I can’t believe some of the stuff they get away with on that show!
