How to Make Social Promotion Easy

by Kristi on May 4, 2009 · 38 comments · Blogging, Social Media

While there are many ways to promote your blog articles through social networks, I have noticed an increase in messages via emails, groups, and forums formatted with options to push an article via a variety of sites.  They go beyond “here’s my latest article about this topic, hope you like it” to being well constructed messages with direct links to the articles on networks that the blog author would like their article to be promoted.

These messages help the blogger target the networks where they know their article will most likely be well received, beyond the major networks like Twitter and Digg. For example, a financial article is best placed on the Tip’d community, and a design article on DesignFloat. Plus it gives the potential promoter their choice of networks to use, as not everyone may feel a certain article will “fit” their audience on every network.

By providing an easy, direct link to the networks of your choosing for promotion, you stand a higher shot that people will promote it on those networks than if you just rely on them to visit the article and then initiate the social submission process themselves. Of course, good articles will always get promoted, but sometimes people who would normally promote something may pass it by because they are too busy to go through multiple steps, vs. having all their options neatly laid out for them.

As an example, here is how I will promote this article in a number of ways, including direct email, forum posting, and group bulletins.

Here is my latest article on how to make social promotion of your articles and webpages easy to use. If you find it useful, please share it on your preferred networks.

Main Article: http://kikolani.com/how-to-make-social-promotion-easy.html

Stumble: http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/kikolani.com/how-to-make-social-promotion-easy.html – Direct link to main article for those with a Stumble toolbar to easily thumb up, and/or direct link to article on the Stumble site for a review (because reviews count more than just thumbs up Stumbles).

Digg: http://digg.com/design/How_to_Make_Social_Promotion_Easy – Direct link to article on Digg once it has been submitted. You can get it by clicking on the number of Diggs by the story, or by clicking on the article link which will take you to the article with a Diggbar at the top. I have heard mixed reviews about Diggbar, so I still go with the first option.

Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/8hsco/how_to_make_social_promotion_easy_kikolani/ – Direct link to article on Reddit once submitted. You can get it by clicking on the comment link under the article.

Mixx: http://www.mixx.com/stories/5102739/how_to_make_social_promotion_easy – Direct link to article on Mixx once submitted. You can get it by going to the submitter’s profile and clicking on the link to the article under their submissions.

Twitter: How to make social promotion of your articles easy > http://bit.ly/WtoFB via @kikolani – Include the message you would like others to tweet, plus the shortened URL to the article. I use bit.ly for tracking purposes. Also, be sure to test your message so that it is under 140 characters.

There are ways on some networks (like Reddit and Mixx) to get the link to the article with a parameter at the end to automatically add a vote, but this does not always work, and people will assume they have already voted it, even though they didn’t. It’s always better to let someone do the vote themselves instead of forcing them to with the link.

Please note that the people and places you send this message to must accept these kinds of messages. People who have sent similar messages to you in the past for promotion of their articles, and forums or groups for social promotion and traffic exchanges are great places to start with this approach. Also remember to take time to review articles sent to you as well, as social media is a two way exchange.

And of course, if you do not want to push your articles this way, be sure to make it easy for people to find social network promotion links on each of your articles. Here are the plug-ins and buttons used for most of my articles:

  • Damn Sexy Bookmarks, which creates the social network buttons under “Sharing is Caring” (or “Sharing is Sexy” if you prefer).
  • Sociable, another great social bookmarking icons plug-in.
  • The TweetMeme buttons which you can integrate into your theme, or plug-in if you prefer to make it easy for others to re-tweet your articles on Twitter and show how many times the article has been tweeted.
  • Integrated Digg buttons – I use the compact style at the beginning of articles I would like Dugg.

  • If you would like to exchange social promotion emails, please contact me on Twitter, Facebook, or through the contact form with your email address so we can share and promote great articles! And if you belong to any social promotion communities, groups, forums, etc. that you would like everyone to know about, or have other easy social promotional tips, please share them in the comments below.

    I use the StumbleUpon toolbar whenever I recommend a site, it’s the easiest way and less obtrusive for others.

    Nice one Kristi!

    Kikolani: thanks for this article. I’ve been trying to learn more about Social Networking. I’ve just recently realized that I’m fairly hindered using wordpress.com’s blogging service vs. obtaining the wordpress.org application and installing it on my own server space. That gives me more flexibility. So while I am not ready to make that move yet, articles like this give a good insight into what I can do when I am ready.

    Thanks!

    @Frank: That’s my first method to go with, but after seeing this format used by more and more people, I have been trying this out in other places, like groups and forums, and with those that share things by email, to see if it gets the votes going on other networks as well. So far, it’s been helping.

    @John: Thanks for the stumble! Yes, this article was tricky, because the links I wanted to use in the example I couldn’t put in until after the article was written and such. So it was fast work! :)

    @Connect: Thanks! The buttons and plug-ins are a must for people coming to your site that don’t connect with you elsewhere.

    @ciphun: I never realized how hindered people are until I created a blog for my job on Wordpress.com. I don’t think you can add plug-ins or custom code to the themes, which is sad. Definitely worth it to get it hosted on your own domain if you want to get things moving.

    7 ciphun May 4, 2009 at 4:04 pm

    @Kristi: actually, you can add code to the themes, but only through very basic and standard HTML code. No scripts, java, flash, etc… I’m still a novice, but I am able to look at a code and generally find what I am looking for and learn how to implement to fix my current problem, which I just recently had an issue with centering my new social media images. I do not know how to code at all, but found the center code and knew how to place it. This is probably why I am not ready to move on to my own server, not sure how difficult it would be to install the Wordpress application and then to get it up and running, then transfer my old Wordpress to my new one and etc…. but it will happen at some point in the future! Currently, switching themes on Wordpress.com

    Hi Kristi, good list of bookmark/share sites and plugins. I like the idea of a custom message for promoting the article with details on each network.

    I prefer the AddThis plugin. It’s similar to Sociable, but also allows users to share by email. The main advantage of AddThis is the analytics where you can track which share sites are generating the most traffic.

    Very useful info Kristi. I’ve been meaning to ask how you send me the StumbleUpon messages. Now that I know I can send mine off too.

    Is there a way to send a shout on Digg to everyone at once or is it a one person at a time’ sort of thing?

    First off, this is a great article. I mostly use stumbleupon and twitter to promote my articles. It seem to be working great but we all can use more and more traffic to our blogs. I got a few social network buttons right before the comment area. It kind of remind readers to click before or after they leave a comment. Maybe I should place some text asking them to click at least one after commenting.

    The plugins make it easier for WP, however for Blogger users, may require some manually code-insertions, or something like AddThis to make Social Bookmarking a bit easier.

    Twitter too, has been a great help in this. Not long ago I’ve posted 5 Ways to promote your article via Twitter. I’m still applying the tactics nowadays and quite impressed with the response. Like you’ve said, most importantly is to make it visible and simple for readers to promote, if they like it. I’ve certainly learnt a few tricks from you on the page arrangements. Perhaps something to be implemented once I migrated to WP someday.

    Thanks for sharing, Kristi.

    I have to admit that, other than Technorati, I haven’t really set up an account anywhere else. However, I have learned that some people have “stumbled” some of my posts, which is really nice. I use the Spread The Word WP plugin, which makes it easy for folks to highlight my posts if they prefer. I have no idea if that’s how people are doing it, but if so, then it’s all good.

    @ciphun: I’m not sure how that goes either, but I’m sure Wordpress has some kind of backup / import utility for that kind of thing. I have hosting through GoDaddy, and they have a feature where you can just let them do the Wordpress base installation for you.

    @Celes: Thanks for the social promotion. I try to make sure my articles are beneficial to everyone who comes across them. :)

    @Salwa: You’re welcome!

    @Sterling Okura: Hmm, didn’t think about the analytics option. I just get that through Google and Woopra right now.

    @Liara: I never thought of it that way. I thought for those who are in need of a traffic boost and maybe received similar emails but didn’t know how to formulate them would benefit.

    @Brian: Once a story is Dugg, you can use the Share option below it on Digg and shout it to up to 200 people I think. If you have more friends/fans, you have to send two separate shouts, with a time break in between.

    @Kushmoney: I try to let people decide to do that on their own… I hope that if they are commenting, they like it enough to share too!

    @YogeshGautam: You’re welcome.

    @Ching Ya: I sometimes get carried away with WordPress and forget about the other platforms. I’m starting to use Blogger and LiveJournal for a company blog, so maybe I will pick up some notes on those as well.

    @Nihar: I think that social promotion is a give/take relationship. I found that once I started doing lots of stumbles & diggs for others, I guess my username was more recognizable, and people started returning the favor. Not to say you should promote everything, but definitely take plenty of time out to do unto others kind of thing. :)

    @Miguel: Hehe, that is one of the nice benefits of explaining these types of things. It helps others help themselves and you in the process.

    @el kouahy: You’re welcome, and thanks!

    @Hesham: Thanks for the Tweet & mixx! :)

    @Dennis: Sounds good!

    @LunchHourBytes: Setting up accounts on the main networks definitely helps get your site some promotion.

    @Shawna: Glad you are enjoying the articles, and I hope they help while you are building your site!

    @ifon: I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!

    @Evita: You’re welcome!

    @Mitch: It all depends on how much bookmarking people do. I have bookmarklets and plug-ins in Firefox that makes it faster for me to Stumble, Digg, Reddit, etc. other posts.

    @Sire: You’re posts are definitely awesome enough to gain natural promotion. :) I typically do the direct emails only to those who have sent me similar emails, or on message boards that encourage such a thing. I figure if people are doing it themselves, they should be taking a bit of time out for others, and I want to make sure my stuff is as eaasy as possible to work with. :)

    @Agent: They are a lot of work. I have ignored my Stumble toolbar, and it’s up to 58 at the moment. Once you get a rhythm though, it get’s easier and quicker.
