I had two hummingbirds leave the nest outside my kitchen window today just before sundown. I'm worried they'll be cold tonight. Their mother tried to push them off their perches and back to the nest but they left her alone. I hope she helps them manage their next few days on their own. I'll miss them!

@Steve: That's funny. I saw two birds fighting over another one in a tree the other day. I wish I had my camera for that, it was hilarious.

@Rob: It was... happy, and bittersweet at the same time, wondering if they have parted ways never to see each other gain, or if maybe they inhabit the same neighborhood and keep an eye out for each other.

i looked at the images, then read your comments, then looked back at the images.

i can definately see what you mean about them saying goodbye to each other. a very cinematic moment.

Wow, that is a very cool to be able to watch the birds as they develop like that. My mother has several humming bird feeders and I always enjoy seeing them when I am over there.

I have a lot of Robins where I live and it seems like there are more males than females, because I always see them fighting.

@Gennaro: They stayed in the nest for a little over three weeks, which is what is common.

@Debbie: I still look around in nearby trees for them. They're out living their lives now.

@Gert: I haven't seen them together since that photo, so it is definitely my favorite, almost like the moment they were saying goodbye.

@Marc: I've been fascinated by this nest since I first saw it. It's amazing how much transpired there in three weeks.

@Sean: Yes, this nest was a bit messy in the end.

@Khaled: Their mom was still checking on them. Even the first two days when they were in nearby trees, I would see her fly over to them and feed them.

It's great that you managed to capture the baby leaving on video my daughter was fascinated and wanted to know why their mum had left them. The humming bird might be back next year, apparently they don't reuse the old nest but often build on top of or next to the old nest.

Beautiful pics.. Almost as beautiful as when I left the nest myself. Those young hummingbirds have some hard partying to do. I hope they don't pick up any nasty addictions. And they need to keep their new bachelors' nest clean or they'll never get a date!
