Lying

How lamentable you were
Lying in a bed of fallen leaves
Head twisted up to the sky
Gazing nowhere through
Those open lifeless eyes
I photographed you so
You would not be forgotten
Bittersweet in your state
Beautiful in your stillness

Ah, the sorrow one feels at the sight of something that has died. I feel it myself. Often shed a tear. And then I wonder why it is we mourn death . . .a natural part of life. Thanks for this poem. I was inspired to go look up some of Gerard Manley Hopkins stuff, because I love his poem Spring and Fall to a Young Child.
