Resting Meerkats

These are two meerkats I photographed this past Sunday at the zoo. More photos and some funny video from that day is to come in the next day or two. Stay tuned – if you haven’t already, subscribe via reader or subscribe via email so you will be the first to know.

Meerkats…interesting creatures…are they the animals that eat coffee beans and then excrete them, so that people with way too much money paper thirty dollars a cup for the coffee that comes from beans in their…y’know? I think it’s them, but it might be some other kind of animal….

You made me go to Widipedia and I was delighted to find this:

“A group of meerkats is called a ‘mob’, ‘gang’, or ‘clan’.”

I also took notice when I read, “Meerkats demonstrate altruistic behavior within their colonies…”, because I’d just posted about altrusim on my blog today…

I think meerkats are pretty awesome animals. Well, that one show, Meerkat Manor?, got me interested. It’s like watching WestSide story with animals.

@YogaforCynics: I heard about that kind of coffee in a movie recently, The Bucket List. It’s called Kopi Luwak, and it comes out of the droppings of an Asian Palm Civet. Their face looks like a cross of a sable ferret and a meerkat in shaping.

@Alexander: Very interesting. I’ll have to read up some more about them!

@Mike C: I really wanted to watch that show, but I heard it shows the realistic side of things as well as the cute stuff. Knowing they aren’t just fictional characters, I would be really sad if something happened to any of them.

I LOVE MEERKATS! They’re my favorite animals and I take heaps of pictures of them when at the zoo too. This is a fantastic shot! It can sometimes be challenging to get good photos because they move around so much. :-)

So cute! Especially the one who looks like he is sitting up.

The Director where I used to work was kind of a weasel but had some decent qualities so we referred to him as a meerkat. This photo made me laugh thinking about him.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog. Your meerkat photo is really nice, the ones I saw were a bit more shy – they wouldn’t stay still for me and kept running away!

@Rebecca: I take lots of pictures of them and the prairie dogs. They just seem so chock full of personality!

@Kim: That is pretty funny. Associative thinking at it’s best.

@Russ: I think it depends on the time of day. I’ve been to the zoo on days where I didn’t see any of them, and days where they were out in force. I also think they are sneaky and sometimes pose just long enough to get your camera ready, and then they run. They are fun though!

It is an interesting show. There are two gangs of meerkats and they’re rivals. Ever read or watch Watershed Down? Just not as brutal and violent. It is interesting to show overall. My dog looks like a meerkat. Her name is Girl.

@Scott: Thanks!

@MikeC: I haven’t seen that. It has been one of those books on my “to read” list of classics. I feel like I didn’t appreciate many of them during high school via my use of Cliff Notes.

I’d like to recommend Meerkat Manor too. It was a must watch for me when it was on the tv… much more interesting than the regular soaps. I’m sure there’ll be clips of it on YouTube.

@John: I think I’ll eventually get it on DVD. I love Youtube clips, but it’s hard to watch things all the way through on the net with my internet connection. :)
