This is a poem by an unknown author. I have come across it a few times, and today, when it ended up in my mailbox again, I thought it would be a good thing to share.

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support,
To aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are..
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time,
This person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons,
Things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson,
Love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life
It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant
Thank you for being a part of my life,
Whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.

I think this is the perfect piece of writing to help us evaluate the relationships we have had in our lives. Maybe the people we have lost were just put in our lives for a reason, or a season. Once that reason had been filled, or the season had passed, they have to move on to continue fulfilling their purpose, whether in this world or beyond. The loss of their presence in our lives is painful, but once the mourning and longing for them has passed, we have to be thankful for all of the wonderful things they shared with us, and we with them.

Kristi, I agree with you that this is a perfect measure to gauge the relevance and significance of a relationship that has come to an end or that is coming to an end. It’s a wonderfully poetic template for bringing closure to relationships of all types. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kristi,
I too have seen and had this passed along to me several times and it is one of those really meaningful poems that if one reflects on, they can see great truth in those words.
Sometimes we get so upset when a person leaves our life… but each person, each lesson serves a purpose in our growth and learning through life. Hence it makes so much easier to not resist, but understand that there is a higher purpose for all things.

Beautiful poem and comments. The seasonal part I find important–most of the people I know now, I won’t be in touch with in a few months or years, but that’s not something to despair over. It’s something to celebrate. Temporaryness is special.

I’ve often thought of this as unresolved / unfinished business. If you keep seeing the same person around, even someone you don’t know, there is some kind of lesson to be learned or some sort of business to be resolved.
When someone leaves your life and you don’t see them again, then the business / lesson is complete. If five years later, you see him again, there is something left that still needs to be learned.
The poem says it in prettier language but I’ve thought this way for, gosh, at least 20 years.

I’ve seen this one myself, and it’s fairly accurate. People show up in your life, hopefully improve it in some fashion, then suddenly they’re gone, and you wonder what happened to them. It was just their time, and your time, to mutually meet, exchange, then move on. It can feel weird, but it happens enough so that you figure that’s just the way it’s meant to be.

@Christopher: Yes, closure. I think some people go on longing for someone that they will never see again, instead of realizing that maybe that person wasn’t meant to be in their lives forever.
@Evita: I think some people affect us in ways we may not even know at the time, but will realize later on if we just appreciate them and let go instead of expecting something more.
@Debbie: You’re welcome. I thought if anyone hadn’t read this before, it would be good.

@Richard: I guess if everyone we ever knew stayed in our lives forever, we would never get a chance to get to know others.
@Kim: I crossed paths with someone I hadn’t seen in 10 years, and it turned out to be just so I could get closure of our relationship. A few months later, and they were out of my life again, but I felt so much more resolved and able to move on. It’s funny how things like that work.
@Mitch: Sometimes that thing that you share with them, or they share with you, is small, but in the long run, it’s the small things here and there that lead you to where you are.
@Sire: I agree. Sometimes you meet people, and maybe you don’t even get a chance to really know them or what they needed, but you may still help them in profound ways that change their lives.
What about the opposite? What about people coming into your life with the sole purpose of destroying it beyond all hope of repair?
