Slow Mourning

I have grieved every day
In the anticipation of your loss
Fearing that every phone call
Will tell me that you are gone
Even though the person I knew
Was lost to me two years ago now

It has been so very long
Since I have seen the real you
I barely remember what you
Were like, except in photos
I hold those in my memories
Not the image of you today

But I cannot move on, no
The grieving does not end
Because your soul is still here
Trapped in a unusable body
With only enough will to keep
Heart beating, lungs breathing

Like a ghost, in physical form
You haunt me, tormenting me
With a suffering unimaginable
That no food, drug or comfort
Can relieve, lessen, or resolve
You live without respite from pain

Above all your physical woe
I wonder what you are thinking
Do you desire that someone
Comes to end your imprisonment
Setting your spirit, your soul free
To move onto to the next place

Or does your strong will carry on
Fighting the battle never to be won
Out of fear of what is unknown
Dread of potential non-existence
If you are thinking these things
There is no way I will never know

Your voice does not have strength
To let you express yourself
Your hands too weak to write
So I will never know any more
Than the grimace on your face
And the sorrow in your eyes

Wow. I like the slow unraveling of this poem. Thanks

It is so hard to watch a loved one deteriorate before your very eyes. As a nurse, I’ve seen this so frequently. And I watched it happen to my own mother as her illness progressed. Your poem was very insightful and revealed your tender heart.
