Here are my first attempts at sports photography with my hubby playing tennis. Three practice sessions and 1,322 photos later, these are the best of the best.
Plus, I let him get some shots of me as well.

Lol I used to play tennis in high school too. Really fun and relaxing sport and yet help you to work out.
I just bought an olympus digi cam and would be taking some nice photos of my daily life too. Haha

@Ben: I played a bit in college, and just got back into it last July. And happy photographing! Once you start, you just can’t stop.
@Sean: Getting out into the outdoors when it is warm again is definitely a good thing!
@Jonathan: It’s not easy at all. I still haven’t figured out the shutter speed to capture his fast swing clearly, but I’m working on it. He definitely wins – we started playing last July, and he’s now rated a 3.5 NTRP, whereas I’m a 2.5.

@Eric: Thanks. I keep meaning to mention the camera I use in my posts… these were taken with a Fuji S5100, an older SLR, 4MP that does the job.
I think those are pretty good, especially for your first attempts. I think the ones where he is in the air are pretty neat.
I used to do some black and white photography when younger and had tried taking pictures of my friend skateboarding once. They ended up fairly poor, certainly no where even close to as good as yours…

Followed the Hawaiian connection to your site. The photos are good! There is a definite learning curve for tennis action photos. I started about 1.5 years ago for my gf Leilani, who is a pro/coach/organizer in the islands. Her website is Hawaiian Isles Tennis, http://www.HITennis.net (HIT). I have posted over 2,500 select photos in galleries and articles there from community events. You can see some obvious improvement over time. Keep at it, get the timing and you will get solid action shots.

I took tennis lessons a few months back but never grew to like the sport. I think it’s a little slot for me and I prefer faster-paced sports like badminton.

Great photos, the weather there always looks so nice unlike the UK which is dark and miserable for half the year. Does the camera have a sports setting with fast shutter speed or do you set the shutter manually. I find I only end up using the manual settings if I have plenty of time, the slightest bit of pressure to get a photo and its straight back to auto mode. Guess just not comfortable enough with aperture and shutter speed yet, but getting there.
On a different note have the baby humming birds left the nest yet?

@Steve: I love the ones where he’s in mid-flight… the first one I took was by luck, but then I went to trying to capture that moment, which was tricky but fun.
@Evan: My middle name is Leilani. It’s funny, because my husband and I were talking about traveling to Hawaii and playing tennis there just before I made this post.

@Celes: Thanks! The beginning level tennis is kind of slower paced, but once you get better, it gets faster. A lot faster. Especially when you get hard hitters in long rallies.

The camera does a great job for being at least 6 years old. I’ll definitely take a look at her site, as I’m always into photography. Thanks!
@khaled: It does have sports mode, plus 4 shots in continuous shooting. I’m only good with the manual settings when taking moon photography with my telephoto lens. Otherwise, I stick with the auto settings.
The baby hummingbirds did leave the nest. The first started flying on Friday, and the second on Saturday. I was happy I got to get a little video of the first one flying, and photos of the second one right before it left the nest.

I find sports photographs the most difficult to shoot, but after a bit of practice it’s much like other types.

I just started playing tennis a few months ago. I really love it and I’m progressing really fast. I have a tournament next week. I really want to try out for JV next year, but I need a way to practice. Does anyone know any exercises (drills) I can do at home to improve my playing? I don’t have a court near me, and there isn’t even a high wall anywhere close to me. I just need something to help out my playing. Thanks!

Excellent Photo’s. I love the excellent use of angles. High speed sports such as tennis can be hard to photograph. I know my first attempts took alot of adjustments with the camera’s features to get it right. Great job!
