Create an epic blog for your readers with these simple but massive tips!
1: Practise Really Does Make Perfect
To improve your blog writing, and even though it sounds obvious, you need to practise your writing to propel your blog.
Everyone thinks they’re good at writing, but sometimes when it comes down to it, you need to improve to take your writing to another level.
Being average is not good enough within the blogging space.
One way you can practise daily is with a journal or diary, that you can record everyday. You can practise your adjectives, your sentence structure, and help you master the written word.
This is something which is updated regularly, you can draw attention to your weaknesses, and improve on these elements.
2. Draft, Write, Preview, Refine, Repeat
There’s many bloggers out there that don’t check their writing. This affects SEO massively, how your content is read, but it also affects how your audience perceive you and your writing.
In order to improve your writing, you can’t just write one draft and then hit publish, as they’ll always be mistakes that you’ve missed.
Here’s what I’ll like you to do;
– Think about your piece of content on paper first, before going anywhere near the computer. Think about what you want your audience to learn, develop your beginning, middle and end, and see what research you’ll need to conduct.
– Look through your research and develop a clear understanding of what you’re going to talk about.
– However you prefer, write on paper or within your blog creation software (i.e WordPress), and type your first draft
– You then need to preview what you’ve written and refine it. Once you’ve refined it, I want you to refine it again. Repeat this process 3-4 times, flicking back between your content and the ‘Preview’ button (within WordPress)
– Refine it again – it really does count, trust me!
– Add your back links and other pieces of content, images .etc.
– Now I want you to take a break from your writing, and do something completely different. Take your mind off it, do some exercise, and once a good amount of time has passed, come back to it and check it again from a fresh perspective. This way you’ll see mistakes you didn’t see beforehand.
– If you finally feel it’s ready to be published, hit that publish button! 🙂
With this tip, it’s all about refinement. Remove words you don’t need, make it readable, and create an epic piece of content!
3. Structure Your Content
In order to attract people towards your blog writing, it needs to be structured correctly.
If you visit any blog and see huge blocks of writing, that has no headings and looks messy, then users will leave straight away!
To improve your writing, make sure you’re always separating your content into actionable chunks.
Make sure you use headlines throughout your content, don’t type massive amounts of content per paragraph (you can see within this blog post that it’s only 2-4 lines long at a single time), and shorten your sentences as much as possible.
No one likes long winded sentences, and with short online patience, this is key to master.
Combine bullet points, images, short actionable paragraphs, and always have the user experience at the fore front of your writing.
Is this writing hard to understand? Can I cut it down? Is it too big?
Always have these questions running through your head whilst creating your content, and you’ll make sure it’s always easy to understand for your readers.
4. Create Irresistible Headlines
If you write fantastic content but your headlines suck, no one will read it!
Headlines have been around for hundreds of years, from newspaper headlines to the more conventional form of blog headlines, that brings readers towards it’s content.
Headlines are crucial to your blogging survival, and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Your headline needs to be eye catching, irresistible, and perfectly sum up what your blog post is about. If you fail to do this, users will simply pass by your content by.
There’s a few resources that I swear by whenever I construct my blog posts, which you should follow with your next headline creation;
Use Twelveskip’s ‘100+ Blog Post Headlines That Work’ when constructing your next headline, that helps my own headline creation. Giving you example headlines and words to help spice up your headlines, this resource is essential to help you create irresistible headlines
Another resource that I love is ‘Co-Schedule’s Headline Analyser’, that has helped me considerably. You basically type your desired headline into the search bar, and the tool analysing the headline; in terms of how powerful, emotional and effective it is. You can then change it according, and with their advice, can make a big difference!
Use Thesaurus.com as much as possible with your headline creation, as you may be lacking certain adjectives or powerful words that a thesaurus can help with.
5. Have A Beginning, Middle & End
A lot of bloggers in the blogging world don’t start with a beginning, and most of the time don’t have an ending.
They go straight into the middle (the main content), without introducing the reader into the content, which is a massive mistake.
Imagine a book without these two elements – it wouldn’t work.
When you next construct a new blog post, make sure you’re starting with a beginning, before going onto your middle, and ending with a conclusion.
Use the beginning to introduce your audience to your content and share what your blog post is all about. Form the middle part of your content to share the main bulk of your content, and finally use the end to conclude your content; offer a ‘Summary of Points’, and give your audience an enticing call to action.
This will finish your content on a high, and won’t just end.
