7 Reasons Why Ecommerce Websites Are Underperforming in 2016

The whole world has accepted the digital media for business. Everyone knows the limitations of physical market over the online market. Physical market businesspersons were eager and always optimize their shops with various trendy material. Same concept can be applied to the digital market, where website optimization services helps to improve your online presence. An eCommerce website has always faced many competitions. This is one among the reasons behind why businesses flunk online.

The market researchers have worked for estimating the reasons for successful online business. Using the Google, researchers have verified and have concluded the following 7 reasons why an eCommerce website do not perform as expected:

#1: Not Optimized Ecommerce Website

Not Optimized Ecommerce Websites

Website bulkiness makes it unoptimized. Several website optimization analysis has proven that any website that do not have any optimized codes will lose a lot of traffic of the website. Mainly, these visitors moved to the competitor’s website because the competitor has optimized website code to make it less weighty or slim.

Google PageSpeed Insights call often use the word “Minification”, which means lessening your website size. Most of the time the website becomes bulky wing to the use of codes that might be useful or sometimes not. It is always better to trim down the code and maintain a balance between content and code. The website build should always remain optimized. Mobile speed optimized website are always welcomed in this digital world.

#2: Poor Product Image Quality

Poor Image Quality

This reason stands among the worst of its own kind. When any user lands on your website, he or she wants to see what your website products contain. Images are the best option to portray your product features. Now if you show a very filthy image with pixels burst out, visitors abandon your website and move somewhere else.
Maintain an extremely high quality image while using it as your product showcase. More the user understands the beauty of your product from image; more will be the sale count. So, quality does matters a lot. Give quality to your audience and in return you will achieve what you deserve, that is profit and good business growth.

#3: Large Size Images

Keeping quality images ensures a rise in sales. Most of the times, such images contribute to the increase in loading time of your website. Say for example, if your image size resides in Megabytes segment, it may happen that the user will see images in parts. It means that the images appear slowly on your website and the loading symbol keeps rotating in your Title Bar.

This is the most hateful experience for a new visitor. The above 2 conditions are collectively known as “Unoptimized Images”. If your website has such problem, kindly refer to a Website optimization service provider and optimize your images. Even if you build your website with WordPress, then you have several alternatives to chop off your image size without disturbing the quality. Most of the time I have seen that the plugins offering Image Optimization reduces image size by 20% only. This does not have any impact on the website loading. The best image chopper till date can be found with PageSpeedOptimizer, which reduce your image size by 70% – 90% without harming your image quality (uses a lossless compression technique based on artificial intelligence).

#4: More than 3 seconds to load

Load TIme

When you are performing a physical business, you will see that customers do not wait for longer time, if left unattended. Similar is the case with Online Marketing. When your website takes more than 3 seconds to load, it is similar to neglecting a customer. He or she will not wait and will move to someone with faster loading website.

To improve your website speed, it is preferred to have a page speed analysis done after the building a website. Even for page speed optimization, Google has offered a tool PageSpeed Insights, for better analysis. Any eCommerce website owner can follow the tips produced after the website analysis and can optimize the website loading speed.

#5: Extremely High Competition

High Competition

Competition is always high, whether it is physical market or the digital one. To withstand the competition, it is always better to be:

                      2 steps…. 4 steps…10 steps…

ahead of your competitor. Most of the eCommerce websites lack speed owing to the unoptimized websites. So, if you want to prevail in business, optimize your website and let your customers feel your speed. Speeding up your ecommerce website will certainly provide a new dimension to your customers and make them feel the best eCommerce experience through your website. Great competition will help you become more conscious and clever, then the rest of the world.

#6: Zero Website Traffic

Zero WEBSITE Traffic

Many a times, your website is new; it is obvious that you might receive zero or low traffic on your website. Still, if your eCommerce website does not provide what the customer wants, it will contribute to your website bouncing rate. Now, if your website offers what a user searches for and if your website is unoptimized, then this will make your website load slowly. Faster the website more will be the customers you acquire.

Mostly, zero traffic condition come into play when people looking for something, and lands on a different thing. While searchers try to find a particular information and they get what they want, the visitors start revisiting the website. This increases the traffic to any website that is online. Now, if you want that a website should get a lot of traffic, then relevancy matters a lot. Try to give people what exactly they want and what exactly you have. This will mean a lot to a business, amidst huge competition.

#7: Bad Website Experience

Bad web experience

When a customer visits an eCommerce website, he or she looks for a categorized bifurcation of the needs and the result displayed must be distinctive from the rest website content. This gives an elite feeling to the website customer. Most eCommerce websites business flunk, owing to not displaying the content properly, as it creates ambiguity in the customer’s mind.

Even your website mobile friendliness contributes to increase in your products and services sell count. If your website displays properly on a mobile phone, this will increase your user experience. If your website is not mobile friendly, make it today itself. Now, if you consider the user’s perspective, then you may find that this particular parameter affects your sales through your website.

Conclusion:

eCommerce business moving online, have created a great competition world-wide. Now everyone searches for a better option of increasing the business through his or her websites. That’s the primary reason why a person must optimize the website, which will help in getting global recognition. People very well know how to achieve a great ranking on search engine, but they fall back on the search count. The primary reason includes not optimizing website.

When an eCommerce website lacks optimization of code and images, increased loading page speed, and create a bad impression in customer’s mind, the business gets affected. Any eCommerce website must take care of the parameters that can affect the customer’s psychology and eventually reduces the visits and revisits from a valuable customer. Above-mentioned points will certainly help to increase the sell from any eCommerce website.

Hey Jaffer ,

In this new era of digitization, people are heading towards online shopping. But the problem with the e-commerce websites is the design, page loading time etc.
You have mentioned some great points here.

The user experience isn’t satisfying.
Glad you brought it up.
~Ravi

E-commerce websites have big markets nowadays. Companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal are making the huge amount of money, Every developer should know these points while developing the e-commerce site. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Jaffer
Great article. You have mentioned some important points due to which people are not satisfied with e commerce websites. Usually when a user opens an e commerce website, he wants quick results but due to high load time, poor image quality, improper design etc. he does not satisfy with the portal due to which he lefts the website. So e commerce website developers should take care of all these points so that people get good results and traffic can get increase. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jaffer,
Thanks for this great and useful article. Really, it’s very useful for newbie bloggers. Website load time is now a big factor in search rankling after recent update of Google. To optimize site speed you should use a good CDN and W3 total cache plugin.

Hi Jaffer,
Thanks for your useful article. Also we need to choose good quality hosting server to host our Ecommarce. Sometime product description is very less, so that customer will lose their interest .

Good article! I think that SEO is becoming so competitive that people often neglect the basics. I recently fixed a contractor friends site. He was getting a decent amount of traffic from the proper keywords, but there were tons of grammatical errors, and the site didn’t flow right at all. People are more and more quick to jump ship when they don’t have a great user experience. We are spoiled.

Hi Jaffer,

Thanks for sharing this great and useful article. Ii is very useful to anyone. Outstanding experience, To minimize these problem developer should aware about site structure , speed, optimized image etc.

Thanks again

You have perfectly put forward the reasons, I am agreed with all your points,..one must have to focus on the points that you have mentioned here just to grow their buisness faster…. thanks for such an informative post. i like it.

Agree with you. User experience is must when it comes to conversions.
Website speed, image optimization and website-layout plays important role in consumer satisfaction. And user satisfaction is must if you want to make them pay.

Hey Jaffer,
Great info mate!

I second you on the idea that slow loading websites are one of the major reasons for bad performing ecom websites.

I use a lot of techniques including CDN, lazy loading images, optimized content etc to bring down my page load times.

What are your specific tips on improving website traffic of ecom websites?

Hello Jaffar,

Such a cool article and important notes in your current article 7 Reasons Why E-commerce Websites.

lots of beginner don’t know about this

an eCommerce website lacks optimization of code and images, increased loading page speed,

if you made as simple as you blog or site is run faster.

but the discount offers attract consumers. like recently Alibaba made $14 billion in just 24 hours its because of that attractive offers.
what you think about this?

Yes, Adam , you are right. But it is not an offer all the time works. You need to be presentable and even if your cost is a bit high still customers prefer to buy. Let me tell you that if you put some offer on the ecommerce website, people even look for many other options and may move to them. The best promising thing is to make your website promisable and faster. This will help your customer navigate your website smoothly. Hope you have got my point. Keep reading all the articles. Thankx.

Hi Jaffer,

You are right!

Most of the e-commerce websites haven’t get rank due to the facts which you have mentioned. In case of E-Commerce websites, I think if we fix on-page errors alone will help a lot to increase the online presence.

Whats Your Opinion Jaffer?

Great article and really interesting to read, as with any business the main priority is great customer service and making a profit. Making a e-commerce store takes great care and lots of pre-planning and most of all the idea of your store has to be unique.

Jaffer I must say that you have done a fab job by sharing this really interesting post with all of us, as a blogger i can understand that you have spent so much time on this to prepare a post like this which gonna be a really helpful to all specially the eCommerce website holder who are struggling to perform well.

Thanks buddy and waiting for some new interesting post.

Well researched and finely written article full of useful info.Quite helping. Well-done Jaffer, its a great job done by you. Hope you pop over with more useful blogs. Thumps up. Many thanks for sharing this.

To be honest with e-commerce you should be aware of all those points before you jump in, I think it’s because there are so many new inexperienced ecommerce startups (don’t get me wrong – that’s great) – and I think with most things the best way of learning is to dip your feet, but a degree of caution must be taken – Great list of things to be aware of btw 🙂

Jaffer,

I agree. When it comes to eCommerce websites, users are keen with what they perceive in the site. Even I am observant when I visit these kind of sites. I always care about how organized the contents are in the site. I also get easily disappointed with the colors that a site uses because it’s somehow irritating to watch. These are some of the reasons why I sometimes do business in social medias because of the simplicity, and at the same time, the large population of the users I can interact with.

As far as ECommerce is concerned we know it well that it is the trading or facilitation of trading in products or services using computer networks, such as the Internet or online social networks.
Your post is sharing good information regarding Ecommerce. Keep it up.

Yeah

@Jaffer. Share few articles on improving the search engine ranking. Coming to this article, I agree with all the major categories given above. However, page traffic varies from brand to brand. As you mentioned, I have observed few links which falls under No.6. Looking forward for more articles in Digital Marketing.

Google Adwords

Hey Jaffer ,

In this digital era, people do prefer websites which loads very fast and have nice UI. The main reason includes not optimizing website. I felt good that you have mentioned these in your post.

Thank You

Most of the e-commerce websites haven’t get rank due to the facts which you have mentioned. In case of E-Commerce websites, I think if we fix on-page errors alone will help a lot to increase the online presence.

what a fantastic post ! this is so chock of useful information i can’t wait to dig deep and start utilizing resources you have give to me. your exumberance is refreshing.

Couldn’t; agree more about the major competition there is on the web now. The problem with more people using internet shopping means that there are vendors springing up left right and centre. I’d like to see this issue overcome but I’m not sure how that will happen.

Thanks for the great article by the way!

These are good points it’s also important to note that a lot of these sites are under performing because everyone has been flooding the internet with eCommerce websites the niche as you would is too saturated now and its becoming more difficult to rank even for very simple items.

However, these are also good reasons but I still feel there are too many of these simple eCommerce websites that are popping up.

I think that people tend to buy in already well known ecommerce sites making almost impossible to new ones to take a piece of the cake.. Also SERPS are plagued with those big names (Amazon for example) at the very first possitions so it’s so difficult to small companies to compete with that.

Great post!
Loading time speed is I think the best point to look upon. I have seen even major players in eCommerce ecosystem have not so good loading speed. However, the User Interface they have is beyond comparison. So, the focus area should be UI which should be highly appealing and should compel the user to purchase products.

Great information !, Thanks for sharing the amazing article on e-commerce website .i got so much help to understand factors like site design ,load time , image size does effects on website performance .

Hello:
This is offcourse one of the best post ive read till now about ecommerece website. i’ve seen so many successful business who started with good amount of investment with unsucessful end.
its the need of today that people want responsive website with full optimization.

Hope to see your second detailed post soon.

E-commerce sites were on a roll during the initial phase of 2015, but things got changed when the industry got boomed with new startups and innovative ideas. Currently, e-commerce niche is quite saturated. Most of the e-commerce sites are filled with heavy images which would naturally increase their loading speeds. Google has already mentioned how important is page speed in the coming years.

Great Read Jaff! I’m agreed with you totally on every point written here. E-Commerce industry is booming and number of companies, start-ups are investing in web and mobile application development but, unfortunately most of them ignores the importance of user experience, competitive advantage and disadvantages. And above all brand trust and digital security matters a lot while trying new website for the first time which is the biggest obstacle for newcomers.

Categories on ecommerce drive me insane, sometimes I just want to see all of the items in one category, not to keep drilling down to such a specific niche.

In this new era of digitization, people are heading towards online shopping. But the problem with the e-commerce websites is the design, page loading time etc.

As far as ECommerce is concerned we know it well that it is the trading or facilitation of trading in products or services using computer networks, such as the Internet or online social networks.

Graet point. Finding low competition keyword is a must in my opinion. It is OK using some product keywords with only 50 – 200 monthly search. If we can find 20 product keywords with only 100 monthly search, That’s equal 20kw x 100 = 2000 monthly search for the ecommerce website.

Hey Jaffer! How are you? I hope you are doing good
I completely agree with what you have said in this post.
Recently, i looked upon a new e-commerce website in my area and it was not a pleasant experience going there.
The images were not of good quality, the loading time was also too high.

I agree. When it comes to eCommerce web site, users are interested in what they consider the site. Even my jelly when I visit these sites. I am always concerned about how to organize the content within the site. I also get easily disappointed by the color using the site because it somehow annoying to watch. These are some of the reasons why I sometimes do business in social media because of its simplicity, and at the same time, the population of my users can interact with.

Estamos arruinados.

i want to say big thank for this amaznig indormation, which is really helpful to guys who started their new websites. this will be helpful for them. please chek my website and give me advises what to improve : vox.ge

I would suggest you to make your website more interactive. Try to add a multi- language functionality to your website as I am unable to understand the language your website is in. Remember, more you will make the website user friendly and understandible, more conversion will take place through your website.

Hello Jaffer ,

In this digital era, people do prefer websites which loads very fast and have nice UI. The main reason includes not optimizing website. I felt good that you have mentioned these in your post.

Thank You

Very important points have been discussed above, however, I think customer support is most important now than ever before. I’ve witnessed how few small local brands outclassed the big names just because of outstanding customer service and fast delivery!

one of the best posts I’ve read till now about e-commerce website. I’ve seen so many successful businesses who started with the good amount of investment with a unsucessful end.
I am waiting for your next post.

This article is amazing , even I have faced issue with some of the ecommerce sites. First the loading time time is more than 7 -11 seconds and they processes credit card payment after various attempts.

Thank you for sharing this plan about blogging. I will try to use this for my blogging strategy, if it works I will inform you. pray for my good luck. regarding this information, the information is very informative for me. Thank you for sharing

This might having many reasons. Images used on website, server tresponse time, no minified code, and many others. You need to check it once on the Google PageSpeed Insights and then you will come to for sure. Hope this helps. 🙂

Great article and a nice addition to the original content audit piece. In my experience however it’s always more difficult to convince my internal clients to prune obsolete content rather than add new content. Your case studies might help with that.

Web based business sites have huge markets these days. Organizations like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal are making the colossal measure of cash, Every designer ought to know these focuses while building up the online business webpage. Much obliged to you for sharing.

Jeffry,

you have described it very well. It will come handy to me as i run a web development company. I can tell my customer to look into these things so that performance of their eCommerce website can be improved.

Thank you for sharing this plan about blogging. I will try to use this for my blogging strategy, if it works I will inform you. pray for my good luck. regarding this information, the information is very informative for me. thanks for share it

Thats to important to make your website friendly with the search engine and have to check website insight permanently and fix the problem…Thanx Jaffer for sharing this information with us thanx a lot

Awesome thanks for sharing! You could not have been more helpful. Last year I did something similar but I never would have thought it turned out that way. I loved all the details, juicy and all!!!

Nice post, thanks for sharing. Before choosing any ecommerce platform, be sure that ecommerce platform has the flexibility to display all of your products in the best possible way. Layout of product is important in any online selling website.

From my perspective the speed of the website consider most. As user have multiple options available now a days he or she can easily move to the other on if it is performing well. And every thing that affect website speed needs to tackle seriously without compromising quality of user experience.

Reading through the list the reasons that stood out most to be me were definitely the images. Nothing is worse when there is not an ample amount of high quality images of the product. Sellers need to almost create an atmosphere where the customer feels like they are able to examine the product just as well as they could in person.

Thanks for the great peace.

In this new period of digitization, individuals are heading towards web based shopping. Be that as it may, the issue with the online business sites is the plan, page stacking time and so forth.

You have specified some incredible focuses here.

The client experience isn’t fulfilling.

Happy you brought it up

Great post! The points listed here are very important. One of the main factors due which the eCommerce websites are under performing is extreme competition. Almost everyone is setting up a eCommerce website now a days. I think eCommerce for specific products would be now more important.

Hello Jaffer,
Those are some really important points that you have mention above due to which most of the upcoming E-Commerce Websites fails… !!
I am quite lucky that I found about those before I started my Own …
Thanks …

Thanks for sharing an awesome and useful article. it is very useful to anyone. Outstanding experience, To minimise these problem developer should aware about site structure , speed, optimised image etc… thankss :))

Agreed with all of your valid points. We are e-commerce solutions and we made every website in keeping in mind all the above points so our clients can survive in the industry.

Awesome thanks for sharing! You could not have been more helpful.

You have specified some incredible focuses here.

Last year I did something similar but I never would have thought it turned out that way. I loved all the details, juicy and all!!!

Interesting blog! The main point here is to make your website better. It must be user friendly, simple and attractive. If you have done these things, your website will be more productive.

Yup!
i am agree and you given nice suggestion about e commerce website. keyword traffic , loading time and most important is competition between keyword ranking in search engine page result (SEPR). it is a big issue because each day many e commerce is launched.and company play Discount & Coupon game .

I’ve read several just right stuff here. Certainly worth bookmarking
for revisiting. I wonder how a lot attempt you place to make this kind
of great informative website.

I don’t think so. I have some ecommerce website and They are very good. But 2017 can be. It the end of 2016, Some website is underperforming and my return is low. Thanks for interesting topic.

Hi Jaffer,

The points you have shared are genuine and the exact reason why ecommerce websites underperforming. Wih the increased use of internet the craze for online shopping has been increased and people wants a website which is well optimized and page loading time should be less. Thank you for sharing such informative article.

Great to know. We are interested in launching an e-comm site as a trial to a new product line. It’s hard to get relevant and recent information. Thanks.

There’s a gent, used to be a Shopify marketing guy, has a lot of insider information like this as well A better lemonade is the site name, but I’m not sure that’s the url.

Hey yeah my thoughts on why it was underperforming last year that due to the raises in advertising cost and website over-head cost was higher than previous years and that has caused quite a few stir’s in the Web Site advertising community and slowed down production the only thing that I found to combat the rising cost was to use social media websites for advertising cost create a few accounts and advertise on there it’s working very well and with all those funds not going to advertising I was able to put that $ money towards the website’s quality and it’s looking mighty fine 🙂

Thanks for the blog……everything you shared was absolutely right,,,,,there was much these websites need to improve….but in 2017 they have improved well and are far better than before

Another impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a coworker who had been conducting a little homework on this. But yeah, Thanks for spending time to discuss this topic here on your website.

After reading this, one can understand the difficulties of trying to find the perfect balance when it comes to poor quality pictures and overly large image sizes. In e-commerce, pictures are very important. Even after an equilibrium is reached, everything must be changed again because internet speeds are constantly getting faster, changing the bar over every time period. Great write up! Enjoyed reading this today.

Also, some ecommerce websites are over optimized. They usually approach SEO in the old way – where they put several keywords in an item. This is enough to raise some flags on the search engines making them rank lower.

Some fantastic tips in here for improving eCommerce website conversions. Load speed is always one of the first things that I look at when I’m trying to improve a websites ranking in the SERPs. These days people invariably navigate away if a site takes longer than three seconds to load.

I think the importance of high quality images can not be stressed enough for eCommerce conversion. Prospective customers want to know exactly what a product looks like before they buy. Including shots of a product from multiple angles can also help to overcome buyer hesitancy.

#2 Poor Product Image Quality is the main reason, which we actually ignored sometimes, but this could create a huge difference ..
.
Thanks for mentioning these points which actually we need ..
Cheers !

A nice article here, i think that people who have grown up with the idea of using computers are showing more responsibility towards writing posts that are thoughtful, do not have grammar mistakes and pertinent to the post..

Hi
Amazing article and a pleasing addition to the authentic content audit piece.every designer should understand those focuses even as building up the online enterprise website.this text has stimulated me and i’m positive it’ll inspire many greater who examine.i cherished all of the info.
thanks for share this facts

Hey Jaffer,

The blog was well written and it explain various reasons why e commerce is not performing well. I want to add in this that the marketing strategy is also one of the reason due to which e commerce sector is not performing well. many startups are not using the trending online marketing techniques, that’s the biggest reason for zero traffic.

Thanks

Thanks for the great tips, Jaffer. I totally agree with you on the image optimization part.

It’s just annoying when you try to open a page and it continues to load endlessly because some images are yet to load.

Thank you, my friend. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Yep, if this post accomplishes anything, I hope it convinces readers to say “hi” at the beginning of their comments. Let’s class up this joint! Haha. ?

That’s awesome the way you’ve used comments (and persistence) to get on the radars of 5 popular bloggers. I’ve always enjoyed your comments, and it’s no surprise you’ve had so much success.

I hope they read this, too! Thanks for helping spread the word with your shares on Twitter and G+. I really appreciate it, Andrew!

And, as always, thanks for the great comment. Hope you’re having an awesome week!

Excellent analysis of all the points. E-commerce websites of any kind need to keep these things in mind to keep customers happy and loading speed and giving out more accurate information to users will highly increase customer satisfaction and retention.
I was wondering if you could write an article about how to actually achieve a few of these goals as I’m new to blogging and wanted to optimize my blog. Thanks.

Hey,
Thank you for your sharing. Your post really help me a lot of things. Now I could clearly understand why Ecommerce Websites Are Underperforming in 2016 to I could consider and fix it in my next project. Hoping it will improved in the 2017.

Our products are designed to help IT professionals conduct employee onboarding and offboarding tasks quickly and easily. A simple click will disable the account, move the user to proper OU, remove all group memberships, clear the manager field, etc, and proceed to the cloud to disable all user accounts.

Good Article. There is a lot of competition in the e-commerce market. Users get many options for a single product. E-commerce companies are attracting them by heavy discounts which are impacting negatively on their balance sheet.

Superb tips here. I know I get really frustrated when I go to a page and it takes forever to load or scroll. This is very helpful. I am going to pass this on to my business coaching clients.

A modern eCommerce site must be secure, functional, have great search, adapt to mobile devices, and load very quickly. Anything less is unacceptable. Online shoppers cannot physically inspect the products you sell, so they will need a strong visual representation of those products to help them understand it, want it, and buy it. Thus, poor product photography is one of the cardinal sins in online retailing.
